Fly rod on the dirt road winding through Eleven Mile Canyon

fly fishing and cocktails: a denver layover

twenty-six hours in denver is a weird amount of time. too short to pretend you live there. too long to sit in the hotel and refresh crew meals.

Crew roller bags and Echo fly rod tubes packed for a Denver layover

so i packed the fly rods, grabbed an enterprise car, and drove.

not for a cute hotel-lobby story. for carp first, then trout — out at eleven mile canyon, about two and a half hours from the hotel if the traffic gods are merciful. september. the kind of colorado heat that sits in the high 90s and makes you question every layer you brought from anchorage. sandals. tank. backpack. rod. the whole look is: i have a layover and i refuse to waste it.

the canyon does that thing canyons do — rock walls close in, the river gets loud, the road turns into a dirt ribbon along the water, and suddenly your phone is just a camera. granite. pines. whitewater chewing at the rocks. long shadows across the road like the canyon is keeping score.

we fished. carp first, because that’s the honest order when you’re still finding the water. then trout — the reason you hauled rods through security and a two-hour drive that felt like a dare. somewhere in there: a snake in the water (yes, really), and a cicada scare that made me jump harder than the snake. nature has a sense of humor. mine was still on alaska time.

by the time the light went gold, the city was waiting again. back to denver for a drink with paul at 54thirty — rooftop, skyline, that easy landing after a day that smelled like river and sunscreen.

that’s the layover i keep thinking about when people ask what i do with a long turn: not the hotel pool. a canyon road, a rod, and enough hours to make it count.

from that trip (the practical bit)

logistics

  • enterprise rental (worth it for eleven mile — ~2.5 hrs each way)
  • fly rods in the car — Echo Ion XL 9’0” #8 (carp first, trout once we found the water)
  • packed light: tank, sandals, backpack — it was high 90s

eats

  • cheba hut — toasted sub fuel before / around the drive

drinks

  • 54thirty rooftop (le méridien downtown) — with paul, after the canyon

eleven mile notes

  • ~2.5 hours from hotel denver
  • snake in the water + cicada scare: free entertainment
  • heat is real in september — water + shade matter

if you’re bidding denver and you’ve got the window — eleven mile is the move. pack the rods. leave time for the drive home and one cold drink when the canyon lets you go.
